Most Wanted Entity Top 10 from Japan

This would be my choice for DXCC desired Entities for 2008 for the Top 10 from Japan.
This ranking is not the result of other stations but entirely my own.

During 2007, One big DXpedition was in May from the Top10's entity. (As of Nov 2007). The most popular, by far, was BS7 / Scarborough Reef. There will probably be greater changes in 2008 in world wanted rankings, From the standpoint of JA stations, BS7 is not a particular rare entity. So JA's rankings will probably remain about the same as in 2007.

Of course the ranking of rare countries is dependent on the QTH itself, as well as, season and bands. The role of large DXpeditions is also a determining factor. Rare countries in the past were places like XZ ZA YI and BY and only a few OM had QSLs which are now history. Today, the choice of rare entities is decided only in regard to Location. The determination of "Rare" is entirely dependent on your QTH. What is rare for you may not be particularly rare for me. I give these examples to illustrate my point....The Northern part of the Pacific from Europe, the Middle East of Asia from the West coast of the USA, East Asia from the the East coast of USA, and the Caribbean sea and Atlantic from Japan. For example, Caribbean islands almost all rank under 250 in the world but rank above 100 in Japan. C6 Bahamas is ranked 54 in Japan but 247 for the rest of the world. VP2/V, the British Virgin Islands is 59 Vs 225.V2 Antigua is 57 Vs 226. These rankings are based on Japan's 59 Magazine and ARRL DXCC.
It's my guess that the rankings will not see any big changes for some time in the future.

By the way, I excluded any single band and mode needs.
These rankings are intended only for normal power level HAM equipment.

7O Yemen 2007 Accurate position (A)
Yemen and North Korea remain as rare prohibited nations in regard to Ham Radio. Details in regard to Government licensing still remain unclear as to Yemen so DXCC Certification remains in doubt. In the past Yeman was divided into two sections, as South Yeman and Yeman Arab. The 4W prefix was used but is now in effect only for East Timor. Both countries were integrated in 1990. Only one expedition was credited by DXCC and that was 7O8AA (7O1AA). Later, two expeditions followed but both 7O1A and 7O1YGF were not credited.

(The ARRL DXCC desk announced that 7O1YGF which operated in the year of 2000 was approved credit from 12 Aug 2009.)

7O8AA Aug.1990

7O1A Dec.1996

7O1YGF Apr.2000

KP5 Desecheo I. 2007 Accurate position (B)

KP4AM/D Mar.1979
One of the 3 uninhabited islands in the Caribbean is KP5. Located very close to KP4 Puerto Rico but not very active because KP4 people say it is a dangerous place, because pirates (not HAM pirates -- but true pirates) use this island for a relay base for the illicit trade of drugs. Therefore it is very difficult for expeditions from KP5 in the near future ... I heard this story from a KP4 HAM. There was a short service expedition in 2006. But of course I think almost no QSO's from JA.

KP1 Navassa Is. 2007 Accurate position (C)

N0TG/KP1 Jan.1992

NF6S/KP1 Mar.1993

AA7NC/KP1 Jan 1992
Also an uninhabited island in the Caribbean sea. In the past many laborers lived on this island and they mined phosphorus stone. But it is now uninhabited. Lately there have been no big expedition ... KP1 is needed also from North America too.

3Y /B Bouvet Is. 2007 Accurate position (D)

3Y0C Jan 2001
Bouvet Island is also uninhabited. The first DXpedition was carried out by LH4C in 1962 and was later followed with 3Y5X in 1989. N4BQW followed later, not as a primary DXpedition, but as an added feature. His primary objective was other than Ham radio but in his spare time, he operated as 3Y0C in April 2001. Since he operated as a single station, he was not able to meet all the needs of hams world wide. From the standpoint of hams in Japan it was a difficult station to work due to weak signals. Needless to say, Bouvet Island remains as a sought after location.

FR /G Glorioso Is. 2007 Accurate position (E)

FR5ZU/G Jun.1993

FR/G/DJ8CR May.1992
The three separate entities around FR,Tromelin Is, Europe Is and Glorioso Is. are under French regulation and are difficult to obtain authorization for DXpeditions. However, about 15 years ago, a couple of government officials did QSO from the three islands and made numerous contacts with Japanese hams. Recently, there have been two DXpeditions....Tromelin Is. in 2000 by FR/F6KDF and 2003 by TO4E for Europe Is. However, there have not been any major DXpeditions to Glorioso Is.

SY Athos Greece 2007 Accurate position (F)

SV2ASP/A Nov.1996

SY2A Nov.2000

A strange new entity from Athos Greece has been heard from 1972. There were expeditions until 1985 but after that, the only station heard was SV2ASP and almost only on 20 meter SSB. His signal was well received in Japan, but it was only one band mode and not on other bands or CW. SY are not particulary high ranked in the world, but in Japan, 90 % are from 20m SSB. We hope for other bands and CW.

PY0 /S St.Peter and Paul Rocks 2007 Accurate position (G)

ZV0SB Mar.1999

PW0S Feb.2001

This entity is not particularly rare for European and American stations.... But from JA it is considered rare and is still ranked high due to the fact that propagation conditions are not as good. Even though small Dx-peditions have occured every year, contacts from the Far East are still not very large scale.

3C0 Annobon Is. 2007 Accurate position (H)

3C0R@@Sept 1999

3C0V Sept 2003
In the past there have been seven Dx-peditions there. However conditions between West Africa and JA do not allow a very long operating window. It seems the best propagation time is in the evening (local time) and via Long Pass and is the best in late Autumn and early Winter season. It is a hard zone from JA (Zone 36) which includes the 3C0 area.

VP8 /O South Orkney Is. 2007 Accurate position (I)

AY1ZA Feb.2004

AZ5ZA Dec.1983

LU6Z Jan 1996

South Orkney Island has a South Pole observation base, but it appears that Ham activity is not high. There have been a few DX-peditions from the neighboring rare entity South Sandwich and South Georgia during the last ten years, but not on a large scale and operation has been sporadic.

YV0 Aves Is. 2007 Accurate position (J)

YX0AI Feb 1992

YX0A/YX0LIX Apr 2006

YV0 Aves Is. is a Venezuelan territory, uninhabited island. It occupies a rare entity position in the world and propagation from Japan is difficult. It seems that entry to the island is not particularly difficult in regard to landing there so it appears that perhaps the problem is in regard to licensing. It also appears that the size of the island is becoming less due to erosion. Some people say that the island will be gone in another one hundred years. In 2004 there was a DX-pedition there, but it was of short duration.During 2006, SFI was almost bottomed out, so propagation was mainly on 20 meters. YX0A/YX0LIX provided a great service to JA Hams.

????????????
F J St.Barthelemy Is. new from 2007 Accurate position (K)

FJ/JH8CLU Mar 2002

FJ/N9SW Mar 1993

Saint Barthelemy separated from FS / French Saint Martin group, and was added as a new entity from 8 Dec 2007. Soon after a few DXpeditions were found there, but unfortunately, 2007 was at the bottom of propagation conditions. So only a few Big-Guns got through, mainly on 40m's from JA. Almost all ... possibly 95% of JAs still have no QSOs, even in the HF high bands. I still don't know what FJ is in the DXCC position. I think during 2008 it will be in the 3-5th position. We are hopeful conditions will improve this year.

In regard to the most wanted TOP entities, they are regularly covered by many magazines and the Web, but how about the LAST ten entities ?
The left ten entities are from the DXCC 2000 announcement. Perhaps the word " LAST " is not as meaningful as MOST SOUGHT AFTER. It is my contention that rankings depend entirely from where they are viewed from in regard to world location.... ie viewed from Japan or viewed from Europe or North or South America.
I do not have statistics, but I would like to make my own forecast in regard to the "Most NOT needed entities from Japan" and contrast to the "Most 10 popular entities from JA". Perhaps upon viewing this, you will be surprised, as seen from a NA or EU perspective.
