A municipal public school, the Masago Dai-ichi Junior High School has a student body of 292 (as of May 1, 2002), including 84 students (43 boys and 42 girls) in its first-year class (equivalent to 7th grade in American school system), 109 students (58 boys and 51 girls) in the second-year class (8th grade) and 99 students (46 boys and 53 girls) in the 3rd year class (9th grade).
Whereas the neighboring community has been developed primarily as a residential area for people having jobs in Tokyo and its environs, a large number of independent houses, condominiums and apartment houses have been built one after another, together with a variety of stores and other amenities for daily life. This led to continued increase in town population as well as the number of students enrolled in this school in the 80's. The number of students enrolled in this school also increased from only 13 in the initial 1973 class to 809 in 1986, the peak year. However, enrollment started to decline thereafter (see the chart below), just as in many other schools in the country.
Parents as well as many other citizens in the local community care much about sound development of young people. Students' parents organized an "Association of Parents" in 1983 to work closely with teaching staff of the school. In addition, a "Committee on Youth Upbringing" has been organized by representatives of the local community to help support school activities from outside.
As for faculty staff, Masago Dai-ichi Junior High School has 27 teachers including Principal and Vice Principal.
