Dear Colleagues
On behalf of the Asian Association for Biology Education (AABE) I am very pleased to invite you to attend the 20th Biennial Conference of the AABE to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand during 26-30 December, 2004. The theme of the Conference is “Role of Modern Technologies in Biology Education.
The AABE was founded in 1966 to promote teaching and research in Biology in Asian countries. In order to bring together and to promote closer cooperation among biology teachers and educators, biennial conferences have been held in different countries in Asia and Australia. This AABE Conference is the 20th Biennial Conference and is organized by the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University in collaboration with the Biology Section of the Science Society of Thailand. I would like to invite you, your family and friends to come and meet your friends as well as to make new friends. You may also cerebrate the New Year in Chiang Mai. We will try our best to make your stay in Chiang Mai, Thailand a pleasant and memorable one. Since the Conference period is during the peak tourist season, please book your return flights and accommodation well in advance.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Conference Theme
The theme of the 20th Biennial Conference is “Roles of Modern Technologies in Biology Education”. Papers related to the theme which focus on the research, practice and experience in the teaching of biology at the secondary and tertiary levels are all welcome. Country reports will be included as usual. General papers on biology education are also accepted.
Conference Venue and Accommodation
Conference venue and accommodation will be at the International Center, Chiang Mai University, about 10 minutes walk from Chiang Mai University campus, 10 minutes to downtown Chiang Mai by public transport and 10 minutes from Chiang Mai International Airport by car. The rate for a single room including breakfast is US$17 and a double room is US$20.
Registration
The Conference is open for biologists, biology educators and researchers at all levels. Students and all persons interested in biology education are also welcome.
The registration fees are
Participant US$ 160
Accompanying person US$ 75
Student US$ 75
The fees cover : Programme and abstract books, conference bag, lunches, coffee breaks, informal gathering, welcome reception and farewell dinner.
Accompanying person must be registered in order to participate in the Conference events. Properly registered accompanying person and students may attend all the mentioned activities.
A grant will be available for support for conference attendance by members from developing countries to be awarded at the direction of the local organizing committee.
Paper Presentation
Participants who intend to participate in the oral and poster presentations should submit the abstracts in English not later than October 30, 2004.
The following instructions must be followed :
(1) Maximum length one page (insertion of a clear figure or table is accepted)
(2) Typewritten on an A4 paper with margins as follows:
Top margin 5.1 cm
Bottom margin 5.1 cm
Left margin 4.5 cm
Right margin 4.5 cm
(3) Use font Times or Times New Roman
(4) For Title use font size 14 pti, bold and align centre
(5) For Authors use font size 10 pti bold and Addresses use font size 10 pti italic and
all align left
(6) For Heading use font size 12 pti and bold
(7) For sub-heading use font size 12 pti, italic
(8) For Text use font size 12 pti, single spaced and fully justified

Thua-nao,
fermented soy bean in northern Thailand, is
highly nutritious.
It adds flavour to strong-flavoured vegetable soups and hot dishes. Since soy beans
are cheap, easily available, and have high protein content, the fermented product
could be employed to provide a much needed, cheap high protein food to the poor

Oral presentation will be done for 15-20 minutes depending on the number of papers and could be made by power point or overhead projection (OHP). Poster board size will be 90x180 cm.
Best spoken paper, best poster paper and best student paper will be rewarded at the General Assembly of AABE.
Please submit the abstract via E-mail as an attachment of MS-WORD format to morakot@chiangmai.ac.th by October 30, 2004. Submission by facsimile cannot be accepted for publication.
Language
The official language of the Conference is English.
Travel to Chiang Mai
Pasrticipants using Thai International Airline from their home countries can check through to Chiang Mai International Airport where Customs and Immigration preocedures take place. If you fly by other airlines you have to pass the Customs and Immigration checks at the Bangkok International Airport (Don Muang Airport) then proceed to the Domestic Terminal for the flight to Chiang Mai.
Direct flights from Kunming(China), Malaysia, Singapore and Japan (Narita) to Chiang Mai are also available. Low-cost Airlines are now operating, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

Currency Exchange
The Thai currency unit is Baht (US$ 1 ~ 40 Bahts, AUS $1 ~28 Bahts, JPY 100 ~ 36 Bahts, PP 100 ~ 70 Bahts). Currency exchange is operated by many banks at Bangkok and Chiang Mai International Airports as well as the the Domestic Terminals.
Passport and Visa
Visitors to Thailand must be in possession of a valid passport. Entry visas are required except by members of ASEAN and some countries. Please contact the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in your country.

Government Office Hours : Monday-Friday 08.30-16.30 h.
Climate
The weather in December in Chiang Mai is very pleasant. The average temperature is 15-20 degree celcius. However, it may be cooler at night and in the early morning.

The power supply is 220 volts AC. 50Hz.
