Takky Q & A
Questions about Takky sent to me or our club will be answered here.
-
- Q : What is Takky?
- A : Takky is a ColorClassic which has an LC/Performa 580, 630, 62XX, 63XX, 52XX and 53XX logic board in its heart. With adding 3.3 volts power supply, Takky can use a logic board from 6300/160, Performa 54XX and 64XX.

- Q : Where can I get a '630 connector'?
- A : The most usual way to get a '630 connector' is to dismantle a donor machine, i.e. LC630 or so on. If you place an order to Apple Service, the parts number is 922-1154. But 922-1154 contains a chassis, a shield and a wiring harness. Latest information told me that 922-1154 was no longer available from the Apple Service. So you'd better search a victim machine for the '630 connector'.
Latest news on Jan. 27, 1999: The '630 connectors' are available from Sun Remarketting (http://www.sunrem.com/). I do appreciate Mr. Stuart Bell for this information. :-)

- Q : Where do I locate an additional 3.3 volts regulator?
- A : You'd better place a regulator IC and capacitors on a small board and locate it at the space posterior to the '630 connector'.
-
- Q : Can I use a video input card with Takky?
- A : Yes! You may use a video input card, an Ethernet card or MPEG board on video, communication, LCPDS or PCI slots. In case of these card insertion, you will have to modify or shave your chassis.
- Caution : The PCI bus logic board consumes more power than LCPDS one does. When you add any boards to your Takky with expanded hard disk capacity, you should consider an additional power supply.
-
- Q : Which type of HDD is better, SCSI or IDE?
- A : Both types of hard disk drive is available for Takky. One of the merits for IDE HDD is inexpensiveness for large capacity of drives. If you already have a SCSI drive of large capacity, use it. If you are going to purchase a new drive, buy an IDE drive. In both cases, you should pay much attention to the power consumption of the drive. If your existing drives consume much current, you'd better purchase a new drive of less current consumption. As for the speed of read and write, the difference is subtle in the current drives

- Q : Can I buy Takky in Hong Kong?
- A : Probably you cannot. Since we do think that these kinds of reverse engineering should be done by the owners at their own risk, we won't recommend any shops even if there are any shops which undertake this modification. You shoud give up the modification if you do not think you can do it by yourself.
-
- Q : Can I use PM5500/6500 logic boards for this upgrade?
- A : Of course, yes. You can use Gazzele logic boards (PM65XX/PM55XX) along with Alchemy logic boards (PM64XX/PM55XX).
-
- Q : If I will use PCI logic boards (64XX,54XX,6360) and if I will not use any PCI cards with it then is it really necessary to make 3.3 Volts regulator for logic board?
- A : No doubt, you need a 3.3 Volts regulator to use the logic boards with PCI bus. Not only PCI add-on cards but also the PCI bus itself need 3.3 Volts to work.
-
- Q : Can you tell more detailed about 3.3 Volts regulator: which IC you were used and where can I buy such kind of regulator?
- A : One of these regulator IC's is LT1585 CT-3.3. There may be some replacements for it. You can also use a variable voltage regulator IC such as LM350T for this purpose.
You'd better search semiconductor dealers with the search engines.
-
- Q : Can I use this 3.3 Volts from additional Power supply I have?
- A : It seems a nice idea to use additional power supply to feed 3.3 Volts. :-)
-
- Q : Is it possible to use the Apple Video/TV card after installing a 630 motherboard into a Color Classic?
- A : You can install the Apple video input card onto a 630 based Color Classic. In this case you will have to modify the chassis. However, I think it is more difficult to include the TV tuner card of LC630 within the Color Classic. You will have to move the HDD elsewhere, i.e. to the side of the CRT tube.
-
- Q : How about G3-Takky?
- A : You can get it with PCI Takky and G3 upgrade card for 64XX/54XX. Please refer to this page.
-
- Q : What kind of G3 card is available for Takky?
- A : Any G3 card using L2 cache slot is enough for G3 upgrade. No PCI slots will be occupied.
-
- Q : Your page contains few pictures to explain the modification.
- A : Stuart Bell made a great page for Power Colour Classic with a lot of pictures for explanation. Please follow this link..
-
- Q : Is a connector included Performa 6400 series available for Takky tune, too?
- A : Yes. It is identical with the '630 connector'.
