VOL.45 A BUS TICKET

I was on the bus that services a rural area in the Blue Ridge
Mountains when a woman go on and handed the driver her ticket.
"This ticket's no good,"he said. "It's from, not to."
"What difference does it make whether I'm goin' or comin'? the
woman protested. "The fare's the same, ain't it?"
"Yessum, the fare's the same, but I can't take your ticket from
when you're goin' to," he insisted.
The woman looked exasperated for a second, and then flashed him
a triumphant smile."Well, suppose I ride backward," she said. "Will
that satisfy you?"
The driver, with an air of defeat, accepted the ticket.

(補足)The actors in this story use very informal language, as in "goin'," "comin',"
"aint," and "Yessum." The corresponding formal forms are going, coming, isn't, and
Yes,ma'am.
