白い息お化けのように飛んでいく

shiroi iki obake no youni tonde iku

A white breath

floats out

like a ghost

鴨の辺に群れるカモメの小春かな

kamo no be ni mureru kamome no koharu kana

A flock of gulls

rest in the autumn sun

in the Kamo River

A middle-aged couple

buys a pair of pottery bowls

at a Momiji Festival

紅葉市夫婦茶碗を買いにけり

momiji ichi myouto-jawan wo kai ni keri

秋深し線路の多き駅に立つ 

aki fukashi senro no ooki eki ni tatsu

I am at a station

where many railroads extend,

late in the autumn

火入れ式弥生の火起こし子らの頬 

hi ire shiki yayoi no hiokoshi kora no hoho

To light a coal stove

Children build a fire in a Yayoi way ----

Their cheeks become red

*Yayoi=an aincient time in Japan

足音に最後の一葉散り落ちぬ

ashi-oto ni saigo no hitoha chiri ochinu

The last leaf

falls down to the ground
