NOBUKI, Kimiko

雪明かりわだちをたどる家路かな

I walk along tire tracks

on the way home;

the snow reflects the moonlight.

雀らが雪やどりする高架下

Under the overhead railroad

spallows gather and crouch,

taking shelter from snow

NAKAI, Tomo (9-year-old)

ばたばたと冬の水かぐ群れの鴨

batabata to mizu kagu mure no kamo

A flock of geese

swim in winter water

paddling their toes

豆まきの大きな声で福いっぱい

mamemaki no ookina koe de fuku ippai

I scatter beans

in a very big voice,

Happiness is here and there

NAKAI, Hirokazu

登校の児の声はずむ初氷

toukou no ko no koe hazumu hatsu gori

The excited voice

of a girl on the way to school,

year's first freeze

豆数え母に手渡す子の笑顔

mame kazoe haha ni tewatasu ko no egao

A girl counts beans,

and hands them to her Mother

with a big smile

濡れぬよう傘さしかけて破魔矢受く　

nurenu you kasa sashikakete hamaya uku

I receive a HAMAYA

holding an umbrella to protect

the arrow from rain

Hamaya = a sacred arrow you buy at a shrine

setsubun ya mame maku chichi no koe haruka

On Setsubun Day

Father's voice sounds distant,

who scatters beans
