三十三間堂、"Sanjju-san gen dou"

今日私は、三十三間堂へ本堂と通し矢を見に行きました。
本堂は、ほとけさまが野きゅうのおきゃくさんのように
いっぱいならんでいて、その前にはかみなりさんや水の
かみさまなどがいました。
まん中の方へ行くと、大きな大きなほとけさまがすわっ
ていました。それでちょっと先に行くと、通し矢をやっ
ていました。
わたしはおとうさんから、
「むかしは、はしからはなったんやで。そやしまっすぐ
いかへんかったら、のきに当たるか、ろうかにおっこち
たりするんや。まっすぐいったらちゃんとまとに当たる
んやで。そやから通し矢っていうんやで」
と言ったのを聞いて
「ふーん」
とうなずきました。

I went to "Sanju-san gen do" (A temple) with my father to see the
main building, and "To-o-si-ya" (Shooting arrows straight to the end
under the elves and above the hallway).
In the main building, there were so many "hotokesama",
Buddha statures standing just like spectators in a baseball
stadium. Some gods, such as God of Thunder or God of Water
were in front of them. In the center there was a very very big
Buddha stature sitting.
We went far, and then we saw "To-o-shi-ya".
My father said, "Many years ago they shot arrows from the end
of the building to the other end. They had to shoot straight enough,
otherwise arrows hit the elves or fell down to the hallway. If they are
strong enoughto shoot arrows straight to the other end, arrows hit
the point. That's why we call it "To-o-shi-ya".
I nodded when he finished the story.
