Preparing for Renewal
It has been passed more than ten years since I wrote this page. When I opened here, there are very few pages of Qi Men Dun Jia, and I could not find other sites of the same themes. It was difficult for western people to read Chinese/Japanese Kanji(漢字 Hanzi) text in browser. Therefore, I must have made the pages with Hanzi image. But today, I can find a lot of Forums, Group or Organizations, Blogs, Books, Softwares and other many kinds of resources. And Unicode allows me Hanzi an English text page without Hanzi images. I made up my mind to re-new this page with some of these new materials, espetially new Chinese books introduced below. And, one more new thing is, as written in above, I joined Five-arts Forum, Fivearts.net. This time, I'M NOT ALONE. This is really great thing for me. I can share and exchange many information there.

Qi Men Dun Jia(or Qimendunjia) is one of the most powerful oracles, to know both good luck and bad luck in aspects of time and space(direction). Qi means mysterious or strange in usual, but in Takeda theory here, it means valuable or holy. Men means a gate, and Dun means hidden or escaped(to make hidden), and Jia is the first one of ten stems, which is considered as the most sacred in this method.

In Dun Jia(or Dunjia) theory, we use a kind of direction chart called Pan, which is drawed as a square divided into nine blocks( 3 x 3. eight directions and centre ). In each directional block, one of the eight gates is positioned. We put away Jia(because of its holiness) and use other nine stems to put them into Dun Jia Pan chart at first, and after several process of making, Jia comes into the Pan chart from one of the eight gates. And that's why this method is called Qi Men Dun Jia.

I have read about at least three kinds of Dunjia in Japan. So called Sangen, Tohru, and Takeda. Moreover, I've seen more several kinds of Dunjia, of which groups were not clear to me. And perhaps, there might be other kinds of Dunjia I have never known.

This is one of the most typical characteristics of Dunjia. In ancient age, those who won using Dunjia tried to keep it as top-secret, and suppressed Dunjia-masters to prevent from Dunjia-secret leaking to the enemies of the governors.

Many Dunjia-masters were arrested, but they'd never made the secret of Dunjia clear. Instead, they made up counterfeit methods as 'Dunjia'. That's why we can find many kinds of Dunjia, and lost which is the original one today.

As I cannot write about whole kinds of Dunjia, I'll write some articles based on 'Takeda theory', which I think the most reasonable one of today's Japanese Dunjia.


1.Basic Background

1.1 Heavenly Chi and Earthly Chi

We need to have some knowledges to learn Qi men dun jia. The most basic one is Chinese calendar for Dun Jia. Because Dun Jia is the scholarship for studying controls of heavnly Chi and Earthly Chi by time factor, using Chinese calendar. Both of Chi are symbolysed by Ten Stems. But meaning of them are different. Celestial ones are related to moving sun, and others are related to the earth, especially directions. This means, that we use the same symbols to indicate status of cosmic energy in different aspects. I suppose it is easy to be confused, but I believe, we should distinguish heavenly stems and earthly stems clearly. They are not the same.

1.2 Yin Dun and Yang Dun

There are two ways of heavenly Qi's moving, Yin Dun and Yang Dun. Both are concerned with moving of Earth around the sun.

Yin Dun Yin Dun is a period from summer solstice to next winter solstice. When during the Yin Dun period, Yin energy is born and increasing its power day by day.
Yang Dun Yang Dun is a period from winter solstice to next summer solstice. During the Yang Dun period, Yang energy is increasing.

This circulation of energy concerned with time can be comprehend as revolution of earth like following:

We should remember how streams influence each other when we use Dun Jia. And one more, this is a factor of time. In the Dun Jia theory, it is important to watch both time( or seasonal) factor and space( or directional ) factor.

1.3 Earthly Stems

Originally, they are considered as Twelve Branches. In Dun Jia way, included stems of branches are used at first. According to ancient Chinese phylosophy, people think heaven are moving, and earth are staying. Therefore, twelve branches are always set at the same position, despite stems are changing their positions by time passing.

1.4 San Qi

San Qi

San Ji means three high-valued symbolic agents and consists of Yi , Bing and Ding .

1.5 Liu Yi

Liu Yi

Liu Yi( six symbolic flags of the king and feudal lords. ) is a stem which is be rearranged by hidden Jia.

It consists of Wu , Ji , Geng , Xin , Ren and Gui .


Liu Yi is determined by stems and branches automatically.
For example, if stem-and-branch of year, month, day, or hour is 22, Yi You, we can find that Liu Yi is decided to Geng stem.

1.6 Ju

Ju


Ju means situation. In Dunjia method, there are cyclic numbers on year, month, day and hour of Dunjia calendar. For example, Ju number of the year 1998 is 2. 1995 is 5. The first situation number is on the year BC 117, which is the starting year of stem and branch as Jia Zi .

Ju Shu ( situation numbers ) consists of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. It goes descendantly under Yin Dun period, and ascendantly under Yang Dun period like following:

Yang Dun = 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Yin Dun = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

There are 18 situations totally.


2.'Pan' chart

First of all, we must cast several kinds of charts to divinate by Dun Jia. There are two main kinds of diagrams called 'Pan', 'Li Xiang Pan' and 'Zuo Shan Pan'.

3. Parts of Pan chart

There are five parts to complete a Pan chart. Tian Kan, Di Kan, Ba Men, Ba Shen, Jiu Xing, and Jiu Gong.


Tian Kan

Known as ten celestial stems like following:

They are considered as generated stems from energy of twelve branches. So, they have energy of earth( concerned with space, and/or direction ).

Basic interpretation of Ba Men ( eight gates )

The second most important part of the Pan chart is Ba Men. They represent status of energy changing by time passing. I describe it as pattern of daily life.

southwest13:00 - 17:00 Sleepy for satisfaction from eating. It is an agent of Kun-Trigram, and also represents Wei-branch and Shen-branch. This gate should not be used except burial.
6Jing
(surprise)
west17:00 - 19:00 It's nearly the time to finish the work. As concentrations get declined, people are easily surprised at unexpected happenings. It is an agent of Dui-Trigram, and also represents You-branch. This gate is not useful for any purposes.
7Kai
(relax)
northwest19:00 - 23:00 Return home after work of the day. It's time to go to bed. It is an agent of Chain-Trigram, and also represents Xu-branch and Hai-branch. This gate is useful for any purposes.
8Xiu
(rest)
north23:00 - 01:00 People are in sleep. It is an agent of Kan-Trigram, and also represents Zi-branch. This gate is useful for any purposes.


Rotation of Ba Men ( eight gates )

Eight Gates rotate clockwise by time factors such as Year, Month, Day, and Hour. We need the current positions of eight gates when we use it to make our life improved.

To position eight gates, we need to determine a position of Sheng Men, for ther gates are positioned orderly.
I'll describe about the way to position Sheng Men in the section 4. I wrote results of rotation here.

We select a suitable gate for purpose. But it is not usual to use Yearly or Monthly gates. Usually we use Daily and Hourly gates to make our fortune better. Of course, it is more advisable to use good luck directions on both Daily-Pan and Hourly-Pan.

However, there are some important rules of eight gates positioning, which influences the result of using gates. I'll write about it in the section 5.



Ba Shen

Ba Shen are eight fountains of celestial powers.
They cannot influence the balance of power of Tian Kan and Di Kan directly, but they make some effects by things what they represent.

The assumed home positions of Ba Shen is like following:

Ba Shen have no fixed home positions.

Under Yin Dun , the first one is positioned on the direction of Liu Yi .

If Liu Yi is on centre, they are positioned on these assumed home positions. Under Yin Dun, the first one, Zhi Fu is positioned on west, and others are positioned on eight directions counterclockwisely.

Under Yang Dun, the first one, Zhi Fu is positioned on northeast, and others are positioned on eight directions clockwisely.




Jiu Xing

The home positions of Nine Stars are like following:

They are not so important.



Jiu Gong

Well kown to Japanese people as the system of 'Kyuu Sei' or 'Kyuu Sei Kigaku'.

They are not so important.



4. Casting Pan charts

We need Chinese Calendar to cast Pan charts. First of all, Celestial stems and Earthly stems should be arranged on the chart. Next, Ba Men, Ba Shen, Jiu Xing and Jiu Gong process might be followed.


4.1. Di Kan

There are two patterns to position 9 stems like following:

Yin Dun
San Qi Liu Yi
Yang Dun
Liu Yi San Qi

Under Yin Dun , three San Qi come at first ascendantly, and six Liu Yi follow next descendantly.
Under Yang Dun , six Liu Yi come at first ascendantly, and three San Qi follow next descendantly,


We use situation numbers to arrange nine stems, which made up special situations by making formations.

At first, the position of Wu stem is the home position of the same number Gong with situation number. For example, if current situation number is 6, the position of the first stem( it should be Yi under Yin Dun, and Wu under Yang Dun ) is at northwest, which is the home position of Liu-Bai( six-white ) Gong.

Numbers of the bottom line of each column of left table are Jiu-Gong numbers of the home position.

In this case, Wu is positioned on north, which is the home position of Yi-Bai Gong or 1 Gong. And, 1 is the number of situation of this case. Next one, Ji-stem, is positioned on the home position of Er-Hei Gong or 2 Gong.

4.2. Tian Kan

Celestial stems or Tian Kan are determined by moving of every Earthly stem or Di Kan. Each Celestial stem moves to 5 times next from its current position. And, the central earthly stem is determined at last.

Example-2-1) Yin Dun, Situation number 8, Liu-Yi is on Gui

In this case, it is Gui, which is Liu-Yi of current pattern, is positioned on east. Hidden Jia is appeared here as next chart.

Hidden Jia is positioned on east now. And here is a starting point of Tian-Kan arrangement. The first one is this Jia, and it'll be positioned on southwest, where is counterclockwisely 5 times next from Jia's current position like next chart.


Example-2-3) Yin Dung, Situation number 8, Liu-Yi is on Gui


In Yin Dun case, Tian-Kan is positioned on the direction 5 after counterclockwisely. For example, The first Tian-Kan is positioned on south west. Next, Wu in northeast moves to south, Bing moves to southeast like next chart.


Example-2-4) Yin Dung, Situation number 8, Liu-Yi is on Gui




Each of other Tian-Kan is positioned as the same way. And finally, the central Tian Kan is positioned. It is the same one with Di Kan. In this case, Xin is positioned.










4.3. Ba Men

The method of Ba Men Positioning is like following:

First, Decide a gate, through which a Zhi Shi (a direct messenger from emperor or feudal lords) comes. The Zhishi's gate is on the gate of position of Jia stem on the Pan. In this case, it should be on the position of northwest( because, Liu Yi is on the northwest ).
And now, Di Pan shows like following:

Xin Gui Jia
(Zhi Shi)

The northwest is a home position of Kai gate. Therefore, we can say we get Zhi Shi in the Kai gate now.

And the Gong of northwest is Liu Bai ( the palace of Six-White ). Here, we get a number Six( of LiuBai ) to count up from Jia to the current stem.

Put the number Six on Jia stem, and count up numbers to the current Stem Wu , like following:

The number for the Wu stem is 1, of which Gong is Yi Bai. The home position of Yi Bai. is north, and, this is a direction of the Kai gate we've gotten in previous step.

Now, I wrote a table to find the answer more easily. Let's confirm the way of BaMen arrangement again. At first, decide a first gate with the table-A following. For example, if we have a Zhi Shi on the position of east , the first gate should be decided to Shang gate. Patterns of ordering to put Ba Men on Pan are like following:

The first position to put Ba Men is decided to the home position of Jiu Gong of Zhi Shi.

For example, when we have Ding as a current stem, and San Bi , is on the position of Zhi Shi , the position to put the first Ba Men is the home position of Liu Bai , northwest .

It should be found easily by using Table-B following:

4.4. Ba Shen

To arrange Ba Shen is not difficult as Ba Men. The first one, Zhi Fu is put on the position where Jia Stem of the Di Pan is placed. And others are placed clockwisely under Yang Dun , and counterclockwisely under Yin Dun .

These are the books that I've read to write this page. All are written in Japanese, and I put Japanese readings under the title line. They are different from Chinese ones. For example, Chinese 'Dun Jia' is 'Ton Kou' in Japanese, and so on.
