Esutoru was also a typical 'Sakhalinic' town. At the beginning of the Japanese period, Esutoru had only 7 households, but they had a rich forest, an excellent coalmine and Esutoru river, which was convenient for the paper mill. In November 1925, the Esutoru Paper Mill started to product, and the town had rapidly developed since then. Although Esutoru was seriously damaged by a big fire from the forest, Esutoru had more population than any other Sakhalin's town in 1930s. Therefore, Esutoru was going to be promoted to city in the last of 1945. Esutoru was T-shaped town, and this urban area was divided the 'Coast Area' and the 'Mountain Area'. But, their dreams came not true. |
