 In 1925, Toyohara had 4,579 households and 21,103 people. It was also the industrial center of Sakhalin, the Oji Paper Mill, Sugar Factory and Alcohol Factory situated on Toyohara. was the central city of Southern Sakhalin. In 1936, Toyohara was promoted to City.
 Nowadays, Toyohara was changed into Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, but Many buildings in the Japanese Period, for Example, the Regional Museum, and Military Law Office, and so on.
