| Probably, Ochiai had originated the Japanese verb 'Ochiau', which meant to meet rivers or roads. In Karafuto, the inland cities like Ochiai and Toyohara were rare case. At beginning of the Japanese period, although Ochiai was one of middle-classed agricultural towns in early Karafuto, this town was rapidly developed by the railroads constructed in 1910 and the paper mill started in 1916. Ochiai was also one of the important terminals between Toyohara and east coats towns. In 1926, Ochiai had 2,298 households and 10,406 people. |
