2001年7月20〜22日、伊豆大島を会場とし、一般から募集した児童・生徒を対象として表記のこどもサミット（主催：日本地震学会、協力：日本火山学会、後援：東京都教育委員会）を企画・実施した。ここでは全体の概要について報告する。実験については、同報告〜室内実験の概要〜、参加者の感想については、同報告〜参加者のアンケート調査結果〜を参照されたい。
経緯と企画概要
日本地震学会と日本火山学会が共同して行ってきた「地震・火山こどもサマースクール」は、今回は日本地震学会の社団法人化記念事業として「2001地震火山・世界こどもサミット」として開催された。1999年は静岡県函南町の丹那断層、2000年は北海道の有珠山をフィールドに、主に地元の児童・生徒を対象とした「地震・火山こどもサマースクール」を開いてきた。いずれも過去に大きな自然災害に見舞われた土地であり、被災地で児童・生徒によりよい地震・火山教育を行いたいというのが企画の目的である。
これら一連の企画の教育方針や実施上の工夫は，次の通りである。
1. 第一線の専門家が、こどもの視点にまで下りて、地震・火山現象のしくみ・本質を直接語る。
2. 災害だけでなく、災害と不可分の関係にある自然の恵みを伝える。
3. 初めから解答を与えてしまうのではなく、まず課題を与えて考えさせ、与えた材料を有機的に結びつけることによってこどもが自分なりの答がみつけられるようにリード・サポートする。
日程は7月20日から22日までの2泊3日とし、第1日目は伊豆大島内の巡検、第2日目は実験と講義と巡検の組み合わせ、第3日目は三原山および1986年Ｃ火口群の見学を行った。
こどもサミット
小学校5年生から高校3年生までの児童・生徒が日本各地と海外（台湾とトルコ）の被災地から計165名参加した。東京および熱海を集合・解散場所とし参加費用は無料とした。企画・運営には全国よりボランティアで研究者・教師などが60名参加した。
7月20日東京竹芝桟橋および熱海港に集合し、船で伊豆大島へ移動する。到着後は大島町総合開発センターで開会式とオリエンテーションを行い、3日間を通じて取り組む課題を与えた。その後、地層大切断面、波浮港、筆島を観察した。宿泊場所の東京都セミナーハウスでは観察した場所のまとめと地震・活断層に関する講義を行った。
7月21日午前中は４つのグループに別れて，周到に準備された実験・野外観察・火山に関する講義の中から複数のメニューを受講した．午後は火山博物館を見学した後に、パネルディスカッションやインターネットを使ったアメリカ合衆国の学校と交流を行い、また課題の答を発表した。
7月22日カルデラ外輪山にバスで移動し、1986年噴火の跡などを観察した。その後大島町総合開発センターでこどもサミット宣言を発表した後、閉会式を行った。閉会式では参加者全員に「地震・火山観察博士」の認定証を授与した。
野外での地形・地質観察や室内実験をゲーム形式での説明をしながら児童・生徒に体験させることによって、火山・地震災害や津波・断層などについての基礎知識を学び、大地の営みについての理解を深めさせた。観察地点では、案内者の一方的な解説とならぬよう、参加者を年令を分散させたチームに分けて共通の課題をあたえ、よい質問やよい回答をしたチームにはカードをあたえ、集めたカードの枚数を競わせるゲーム方式をとった。
今回の企画で得たこと学んだことを参加者がサミット宣言としてまとめ発表した。

Summary
We held a World Wide Children's Earthquake-Volcano summit on July
20-22,2001 as the Seismological Society of Japan became a corporation.
Our Management policy is as follows,
Scientists tell children about earthquakes and volcanos.
Children learn not about the risks of natural disasters but about
the long-term benefits produced by the activities of earthquakes
and volcanos.
The children were split into several teams of 7 or 8 throughtout
the activities.We first pose several questions to the children
and support them finding their own answers.We intoroduce team
competition for collecting cards which are given to children presenting
unique answers or ideas.
The body
We opened the Working group on June 2001 and
looked for volunteer academic researchers and teachers.We invited
school children from places that have suffered damage due to natural
disasters.This project was held from July20 to July22.We went
to observation points at Izu Oshima on July20.We learned about
earthquakes and volcanoes by experiments and observations on July21.At
last we went to Mt. Mihara on July22.Participants in the summit
were160 Japanese children and 5 overseas children who came from
Taiwan and Turkey.They were taken care of by about 60 volunteer
academic researchers and teachers.Newspapers, Museum and the Board
of Education cooperated with advertising. There was no cost for
participation.
The schedule was as follows.
July 20
Children gathered in Takeshiba-sanbashi Tokyo and the port of
Atami and left to Oshima by ship.An opening ceremony and orientation
was held in the Oshima-cho town office.Then we went to Chiso-Taisetu-Danmen(The
great outcrop of tephra layers), the Habunominato maar and the
Fudesima neck.Finally, we arrived at the Seminar-house and stayed
there for 2 nights.
July 21
Children separated into 4 groups of 40, and learned about earthquakes
and volcanoes by the experiments and observations.We gathered
in the Oshima Volcanic Museum in the afternoon and announced the
answers to the questions that was given to the children the previous
day.
July 22
We went to Mt. Mihara and observed lava, volcanic ash and topography.A
closing ceremony was held in the Oshima-cho town office and the
declaration was announced .
