RESOLUTION OPPOSING MILITARY ACTIONS AGAINST IRAQ |
|
RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council adopt the attached resolution opposing military action by the United States against Iraq and authorize the Mayor to send letters to President Bush and to our federal, state, and local representatives communicating Council’s actions. DISCUSSION: Many local residents have approached City Councilmembers in person or through letters and petitions, urging that the City Council oppose United States military action against Iraq and supporting diplomatic efforts to resolve differences. Many religious leaders and organizations have joined their voices to those opposing U.S. military action. (See the attached Appendix #2 by 48 religious leaders and organizations.) Concerns include a lack of international support for unilateral military action by the United States, the potentially destabilizing impact of a war on the entire Mid East and the threat of wider war, the potential damage to the US and world economy, and the inevitable environmental destruction and likely harm to innocent civilians. More recently Saddam Hussein has offered to permit international weapons inspectors without condition into Iraq. It is vital that the City Council oppose President Bush’s rush to war and that the City Council support international diplomatic efforts toward peace. FISCAL IMPACT: Approval of the above recommendation has no fiscal impact. Submitted by: Christopher Krohn Mayor Tim Fitzmaurice Councilmember Scott Kennedy Councilmember |
