 Description of the Course

This course is for the students who are interested in learning more about Japanese business, enterprise and management.  Not only generic models but also many case examples are lectured and discussed in this course.  The instructor provides lectures to give overviews about Japanese business and management based on selected materials.  After several lectures, the students should prepare short resumes including the summary and comments about each topic to make presentations for class discussion. The students will be able to analyze situations of Japanese firms and to make comments on the strategies and operations critically after completing this course.

Grading policy

Class participation and contribution to discussion    40%

Presentation in Class                           30%

A written assignment                           30%

Your active participation in the discussion in class is considered very important in this course as well as presentation in class. An individual written assignment is required by the end of this course.  Your point of view about some critical issue of Japanese business should be demonstrated clearly and concisely.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

The Year-in-Japan program has also adopted a uniform attendance policy for the afternoon Japan Studies courses. You are allowed only two unexcused absences during the semester without penalty. A third unexcused absence will reduce your grade in the course by 10 points (equivalent to one letter grade in the American system). A fourth unexcused absence will reduce your grade by another 10 points. More than four unexcused absences will result automatically in a failing grade for the course. Legitimate excuses for absence are normally limited to illnesses or accidents that require medical attention. Please consult with Professor Vance in advance if you believe that you have some other legitimate reason for absence. Students must document all legitimate excuses.
