As you may know that Hamamatsu, Japan is famous for its Large Kite Festival, from May 3rd through 5th, originating to celebrate the birth of heir to a local landlord by flying large kites hundreds years ago. Still the purpose of the festival is to celebrate new-born babies, and the family provide a new big kite to fly and feast to the kite club parade. More than 160 communities now participate the kite festival, they fight together to fall down other's by cutting kite-string with its friction heat. The fight is very wild and exciting, being encouraged by bugles and drams. The standard size is 2.9m by 2.9m: 8.4 m2, with each communities' logo proudly.
I have been a member of our community's kite club called Hikuma-Miya-gumi for 17 years and now am volunteering to the club as the vice-chairman for two years, as of 2005.

We checked the stock of our kites, as to whether we should make more kite or not for this season.
Usually, the kites used last year to celebrate new-born babies donated to the club by the family though, we averagely have three new kite every year. However 10 kites through the season are necessary.
Fortunately, we found 17 kites in the storage.

Yamaha motor's two R&D trainees from Netherlands: Eric and Wies took part in the parade of communities menbers that join the Kite Festival as members of Hikuma-Miya gumi.
They took advantage of their tall height by looking around the parade itself even though they are in it.

'04/04/24 Practice of flying Kite

As the Hamamatsu Kite Festival is approaching again around the corner, our Kite club members practiced flying Kite, on the Nakatajima Beach. The festival will be held from May 3 to May 5.
It was very windy and clear. On the beach, it looked like sand storm. However we flew Kite in order to practice and kink the string out. Around twenty people took part in and enjoyed the event.

As it is very windy, Kite is bent arched as much as possible. And setting the tail rope.

Ready to fly!

Swaying left and right, the kite is flying in the blue sky.
The kite size is 4Jyo: 7m2 (80sq.ft.)

Its tension is too strong to keep the kite not flying away by one person.

'03/05/03 Fly large Kite for my grandson

2003 May 3rd, I was the owner of the big Kite which had the area about 8square meter, for my grandson Wataru.
Hamamatsu has the tradition that lasts more than 300years , now called Hamamatsu Kite Festival, which had started celebrating the birth of first son of the Hamamatsu area's governor and also praying the baby's healthy and happy life by the subordinates.

It was a vary beautiful day and had good breeze, which was just suitable for flying kite: not too strong and not too weak as well, and was about 1m/s. The Kite flew very smoothly, while the method to begin flying it is very difficult.

While the string made of hemp was extended about 500m long, then my grandson was blessed by the participants, with the music of a dozen trumpet played by the children and with a small circle-shaped & aggressive parade by the dozens of Kite club members I belongs to. He was in the center of the parade by riding club chief's shoulder at that time.

I was very happy even I spent more then $2,000 for the Kite. The Kite in the blue sky looked like promising the happy and healthy life of my grandson.
