SCHOOL HISTORY
Ueno Senior High School started its history 1924 as the Second Tokyo Metropolitan Secondary School. The date of its foundation was soon after the great earthquake in the kanto district, when Tokyo was completely destroyed and efforts were made to reconstruct the city. The establishment of the school was one of the reconstruction programs of those days in which special emphasis was placed on education in the belief that it was indispensable to the stability and progress of the public mind.
Since then the school has been promoting education under the motto of "Independence and Cooperation."
In the 1950 education system reform, the school was named Tokyo Metropolitan Ueno Senior High School. The School has produced an innumerable number of distinguished scholars, doctors, lawyers, businessmen and so on.
The school buildings are situated in the north part of Ueno Park, adjacent to Tokyo Art College and Ueno Zoo. There are such cultural facilities as museums of history, science, and art in the park. Students of the school thus have the privilege of appreciating their cultural heritage at first hand and within easy reach. In this sense the school is truly surrounded by an ideal learning environment.
