Obscure Tape Music of Japan vol.12

JOJI YUASA "Miniatures of Concrete Works"
(CD) price: 2,600 yen
Edition OMEGA POINT Archive Series OPA-012

1) Nadja, Twincling in Stars
This is the incidental music, by NHK Radio, based on "Nadja" by Andre Breton who made "Declaration of Sur-Realisme". The actual chart of constellations was played by three players[1] (violin, piano and vibraphone) which was supposed as the music score. And birds' voices, electronic sound, sound generated from inside piano, through music concrete tecnique and constructed at the NHK Electronic Music Studio where my first so called pure electronic music "Projection Esemplastic for White Noise" was made in the same year 1963.

2) Music for a Cenotaph for Industrial Victims
This is the music for the unveiling ceremony of a cenotaph for the industrial victims, which was set in the woods of Tama hills suburb of Tokyo. The music consists of;
A) Echoed "wooden bells" in the woods, made from lowered Marimba modurated by square wave.
B) Various metamorphosed sounds reminding industrial works, for the offering flowers by the attendants.
C) Again, reverbrant sound of the wooden bells for the refiring attendants from the celemony.

3) Music for the Main Pavillion of the Okinawa Oceanic Expo
This composition, music concrete work was made prepared for the Oceanic Expo in Okinawa prefecture in 1975. Folk music with an indigenous string instrument (Jamisen), voices of various sea birds, engine sound of a boat, metamorphosed instrumental sound which would remind wind and waves of the sea and chamber orchestral music[2] are combined and constructed. An Italian Folk Song <To the Sea> is arranged for chamber orchestra and recorded by the composer as important sound source of this music concrete work, which should be listened as if a recurrent, dear old tune being swayed on the wind coming out of one's rememberance.

"This CD contains one of my comprehensive work on music concrete "Aoi-no-Ue" and my last electronic music "My Blue Sky (No.1)" before I went into computer music. "Aoi-no-Ue" is a noh-play composed by Ze-Ami in 15th century, based on famous "The Tales of Genji" written by Murasaki Shikibu in 11th century. The text is recomposed by me keeping original words. And it was sung in the style of Noh-chant by three brothers of Noh actor, Kanze Hideo, Hisao and Shizuo. This work "Aoi-no-Ue" is composed mainly based on metamorphosed sound of Noh-chant. The other sound is concrete sound such as birds songs, water drops, glasses, warped sound of vibraphone, some generated electronic sound and others.
My Blue Sky (No.1) is a special electronic work for me, for most of my other works on this field are based on White Noise. Where as only this piece is exceptionally using the other generated sound. However, my thoughts on denying to use so called bare generated waves such as sine, square triangle or saw are not changed. In this work only 'clicks', 'pulses' and various kinds of 'beats' induced from them, varying piches, width and their frequency of the pulse are adopted. For example I controlled successively occuring pulses of low frequency of sine wave by means of triggering with the frequency of square wave." - Joji Yuasa

2nd edition was issued by Ryuhei Yuasa's new and quite different artwork!

Obscure Tape Music of Japan vol.11

MAMORU FUJIEDA "Radiated Falling"
(CD) price: 2,600 yen
Edition OMEGA POINT Archive Series OPA-011

I_6'43" (sound file)
I-V_27'39" (sound file)

Both《Radiated Falling》 (1980) and《The Art of Fugue》(1981) are tape compositions in which sound materials of a prepared piano are electronically processed and modulated in various ways. 《Radiated Falling》is based on 《Falling Scale No.2 for piano》(1975). The sound materials were then transformed to layered sonic textures through the ring modulator, the phase shifter, the harmonizer, and various delay processes.
《The Art of Fugue》is based on a simple fugue in four voices from the first piece in The Art of Fugue by J. S. Bach. The four voices were randomly cut into fragments, which were then reassembled to form four new voices. Each of the voices played by a differently prepared piano was recorded in a multi-track recorder to produce sound materials for the piece. The sound materials of the prepared piano was then electronically modulated and spatially processed. - from liner note

limited special edition with miniCDR (draft pieces of both works) is also available. 50 copies, price: 4000 yen.
