I was born in Gifu city, Gifu prefecture in the middle of Japan, which
is near the three big rivers,Kiso, Nagara, and Ibi where the water
is very clear. So it was easy for me to fish in the rivers. Also the prefecture has no sea around it, so it is common to eat mostly fresh water fishes and there are a lot of restaurants that serve fresh water fish dishes. In this way, I began fishing crucian carp. I spent my boyhood there during World War II. As I couldn’t get proper fishing tackles in such situation, I couldn’t try fishing carp. In 1952, during my holidays after the examinations of my university, I improved my tackles for fishing crucian carp and tried to fish carp for the first time. |

| It was in 1973 that I began carp
fishing in earnest. Then, I read the book named “Wild Carp Fishing”written by Shigeki Konishi, which I was moved by. It is a wonderful book which tells me
the tackles,carp fishing
techniques in surprising
contexts. I read it again and
again. Whenever I went abroad on business, I took it with me and read it in the plane or when I was tired
for my work. I can’t thank it enough. Fortunately, I met the author and talked with him for a long time at a fishing tackle show several years before he died. This is my best memory. I talk about this book in “9 Books on Carp Fishing”. At that time I heard of “the Freshwater Big Fish Club” in Japan, whose president was Mr. Konishi, but I did not join the club, because I was very busy and was just trying hard to improve my fishing skills with his book as my textbook. In 1976, I applied for “Kanto District Big Fish Club” whose president was Isao Yamada. However I was soon transferred abroad and couldn’t join it. During my ten years residence abroad, I could enjoy carp fishing only when I came back temporarily. This is “my lost ten years”. After I returned to Tokyo, I participated in “Carp Fishing Contest in East Japan” many times. Every time I was astonished at the good results of other participants. It was in October, 1998 that I won the prize at last. As many as 700 people were in the contest. You may not realize how huge it was! We were allowed to use up to five rods per person, so in total, over 3,000 rods were in the Kasumigaura(the Lake Kasumi), Kitaura(the Lake Kita), the Hitachi Tone River, the Tone River and so on. If I leave home late, I could not find any place to fish. Besides, this contest was held on the weekend. So many other people who were not participants were also fishing around us. You can imagine how crowded it was! So, I was very lucky to have won the prize in such a big contest. |
