Britain
Between Japan and other countries there is a big difference in evaluating our games. We evaluate by the length, not by the weight like in other countries.  I can’t say which is fair. There is also a difference in bait, owing to the environment, temperature and the kind of carp
My British friend once told me that British anglers brought small carp from the European Continent into the U.K. and put them into private ponds which were reserved only for themselves because in the U.K., carp cannot breed easily due to the low temperature.
The  carp (called "German Carp" in Japan) which resembles cultivated carp can be seen there.  So it is natural for them to use the different bait from ours, while in Japan our main target is wild carp but not cultivated one.
The Danube

I stayed in Beograd for a few months in 1976, and tried carp fishing in the Danube.

In the fall of 2006, I planned to go for carp fishing in Romania where the lowest part of the Danube runs through.

I have longed for carp fishing in the Danube for thirty years.  Planning to go fishing in Romania,  I recalled my carp fishing thirty years ago in Beograd, the former capital of Yugoslavia.

One of the treasure from that trip is the series of postcards I bought there.  Though the photographs I took there have faded out, the postcards have kept its colors.  I wonder if the photographs I installed in my PC would remain the same as they are now in thirty years later.

 Metropaul Hotel where I stayed

The hotel was in the center of the city, and the room charge was reasonable. The dishes were delicious, and I ordered smoked carp on the menu only to find it canned ones.

The Republic Square

During my stay in Beograd, I went carp fishing in the Danube on Sunday.  A lot of anglers seemed to be trying to catch pikes.  I used paste bait, but couldn’t catch any.  After coming back in the city, I visited a fishing shop, and there, asked anybody could tell me good carp fishing sites.  One of them was kind enough to offer taking me to the spot in the suburbs.  He also gave me an advice to use cheese paste bait.  It was such a pity that I had no time to go there with him.

Beograd has been an important place for the strategy, which lies between the Danube and the Sava.

I bought the following postcards in 1976.  The Danube was, and also is, dirty and far from “The Beautiful Blue Danube”

When I was working in Singapore as an employee 1976, the company asked me to go to Beograd. As I got an idea to try carp fishing in the Danube, I bought in hurry fishing rods, bait or so on in Singapore.  The rod was “Shakespeare” made in U.K.. This rod becomes 50 cm long when you fold it, and 3m long when you extend it. The grip was covered with cork. As you can tell, it was very handy for traveling.
The bait was different from the one that I was used to in Japan.

I tried carp fishing near the big tree in the center of the picture.

The Sava at the left was cleaner than the Danube at the right, which had much trash and garbage.

I found an old map of that area.  You can easily see that the Danube comes down from the upper post and the Sava flows from the west, meeting at Beograd.

My old photograph
Left side  the Danube
Right side   the Sava

The Sava, just before the juncture

I bought two rods in Singapore,  as you see in the right photograph.

  Later
I broke one of them in Imamura, the Tone river in Japan.  I was so young that I could not stay calm when a carp pulled the rod.  I well remember an old man sitting near me smiling at.  Oh! now, I am older than he was then!

Since the rod was convenient to carry around when I travel, I looked for this type of rod in many shops in Japan, but could not find one.
In the fall of 2006, I thought there might be no more chance for me to go for the Danube, but I was again at the Danube not in former Yugoslavia but in Romania.

Malaysia
While I was working in Malaysia, I tried to fish for carp by the Pahang River all day long, but I could not catch any.
Singapore
In Singapore, I found a commercial pond for carp fishing.
Italy
I went to Italy twice to enjoy carp fishing which is reported in “5 a Carp Fishing in Italy”. (You can click here, but it is not translated into English)
