Subfamily Leptocerinae Leach

Eleven genera, Adicella, Athripsodes, Ceraclea, Erotesis, Leptocerus, Mystacides, Oecetis, Parasetodes, Setodes, Triaenodes and Trichosetodes have been recorded from Japan.

Genus Adicella McLachlan

Three unnamed species belonging to this genus have been recorded from Hokkaido or Honshu, Japan (Uenishi 1993), but they have not yet been described.

Genus Athripsodes Billberg

One species belonging to this genus has been recorded from Japan, and an unnamed species accompanied with an alphabetic code was described for the larva, which was not associated with adult.

Genus Ceraclea Stephens

Eleven species and one unnamed species belonging to this genus have been recorded from Japan. Yamanouchi (1987) recorded an unidentified species from Hokkaido with fine illustrations of the adult and larval stages.

Genus Erotesis McLachlan

Only one species, E. japonica Iwata 1930 was described from Honshu based only on the larval stage. Uenishi et al. (1994) recorded an unidentified species based on adult material from Kyushu.

Genus Mystacides Berthold

Three species belonging to this genus have been recorded from Japan, and two unnamed species accompanied with an alphabetic code were described for the larvae, which were not associated with adults. Tsuda (1942b) recorded Mystacides longicornis (Linnaeus) from Japan, but Uenishi (1993) suggested that it was a misidentification of an undescribed species. Furthermore, Tanida (2003) recorded an unidentified species from Ryukyu Islands with illustrations of a larva and case.

Genus Oecetis McLachlan

Twelve species and one subspecies belonging to this genus have been recorded from Japan. Tanida (1997, 2003) recorded one undescribed species from Okinawa. Futhermore, O. dilata Yang and Morse 2000 was recorded from Hokkaido without collecting data (Malicky, 2005b).
