　『サンタクロースっているんでしょうか？』

　　　

Dear Editor:
I am 8 years old and Some of my little friends
say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says "If you see it in The Sun it's so"
Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been
affected by the skepticism of a skeptial age. They do not
believe except what they see. They think that nothing can
be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds,
VIRGINIA, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In
this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in
his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him,
as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole
of truth and knowledge
　　　Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly
as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that
they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.
Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus.
It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS.
There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to
make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment,
exception in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood
fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus!
　You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa
to hire men to watch in all the chimneyss on Cristmas Eve to catch
Santa Claus, but even if they did not seen Santa Claus coming down,
what would that proved? Nobody sees Santa Clause, but there is no
sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world
are those that neither children nor men can see.
　　Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn?
　　Of course not, but that's no proof that they are no there.
Nobody can concieve or imagine all the wonders there are unseen
and unseachable in the world. You may tear apart the baby's rattle
and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering
the unseen world which not the strongrst man, nor event the united
stregth of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart.
　　Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain
and view and picture the supernant beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real?
　　Ah. VIRGUNIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank Good! he lives, and he lives foerver.
A thousand years from now, VITRGINIA, nay, ten times ten thousand years
from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

　　　　　バージニアさん、お友達は間違っています。みんな、疑う時代の
　　　　疑い病に慣れてしまっているのです。自分に見えることだけしか信
　　　　じません。心が狭くて、分からないことは無いこと思っているので
　　　　す。バージニアさん、そのような人は大人であっても子どもであっ
　　　　ても、心が狭いのです。真実と知識の全てを分かることができる知
　　　　恵や人を取り巻く広い世界に比べ、我々のこの大きな宇宙で、人は
　　　　知恵において虫や蟻にすぎません。
　　　　そうです、バージニアさん、サンタ・クロースはいるのですよ。
　　　　愛や広い心や敬虔さと同じ様に、サンタ・クロースは確かにいます。
　　　　愛や広い心や敬虔さは、あたの人生を美しさと楽しさに満ち溢れた
　　　　ものにしていることをあたなたはよく知っていますね。サンタ・ク
　　　　ロースがいないなら、ああ、世界はどんなに寂しくなるでしょう。
　　　　バージニアがいなかったら、どんなに寂しくなるのかと同じです。
　　　　子どもらしい誠実な心がないなら、そうなればこの現実に耐えられ
　　　　るようにしてくれる詩や物語もなくなります。我々は楽しみを持て
　　　　なくなり、ただ感覚と視覚的なものだけになってしまうでしょう。
　　　　子どもらしさがその光明でこの世界を満たしていた、その永遠の光
　　　　も消え失せてしまいます。
　　　　　サンタ・クロースがいるって信じない、ですって！　妖精がい
　　　　るって、信じないというのと同じです。クリスマス・イブに煙突み
　　　　んなを見張りサンタ・クロースを捕まえ証明しようと、人を雇って
　　　　とお父さんに頼んでみるのもいいのですが、その人達が降りてくる
　　　　サンタ・クロースをだれも見なかったとしても、それが証拠になる
　　　　のでしょうか？だれもサンタ・クロースを見ていませんがサンタ・
　　　　クロースがいないという証拠にはなりません。この世界でもっとも
　　　　現実的なものは、子どもにも大人にも目で見ることができるような
　　　　ものではありません。芝生で踊っている妖精を見たことがありまし
　　　　たか？勿論ありませんね、しかし妖精がいないという証拠にはなり
　　　　ません。誰かが、この世界で目に見えなく探すこともできない不思
　　　　議なこと全部を思い付いたり「存在しないもの」を思い描いたりし
　　　　たのものではありませんし、そんなことのできる人はひとりもいま
　　　　せん。
　　　　　赤ん坊のガラガラおもちゃをこわし、内側で音を出しているのは
　　　　何かを目で見ることはできます。しかし目に見えない世界のベール
　　　　は、一番力持ちの男でもまた今まで生きていた力持ちが集まっても、
　　　　引き裂くことができないものです。信頼・想像力・詩・愛・物語だ
　　　　けがそのカーテンを上げ、その向こうに在る素晴しい美しさと輝き
　　　　を見せありありと描いてくれます。それ全部、事実なの？　オー、
　　　　バージニア、この世界でこれほど真実で長くつづくものは、他には
　　　　ありません。
　　　　　サンタ・クロスはいないって！　ありがたことに、彼はいて、ま
　　　　た永遠に生きています。バージニアさん、今から千年も、いや今か
　　　　ら一万年の十倍も子どもの心に喜びを与え続けるのですよ。

　　　　　　　この社説を書いたのは、永年サン新聞で社説を書き続けたベテラン記者
　　　　　　で、当時５８歳だったフランシス・P・チャーチ氏です。
　　　　　　彼はこの社説を発表した９年後に、病気の為６７歳でひっそりと亡くなりました。
　　　　　　その時、サン新聞は初めて彼の紹介記事を掲載しました。しかし、彼がこの有
　　　　　　名な社説を書いた事は書かれませんでした。

　　　　　　サン新聞やそれ以外の新聞も、クリスマスが近づくと毎年この文章を掲載して
　　　　　　いたので、全米で有名となりました。彼の死後、ようやくあの有名な社説の筆者
　　　　　　としてフランシス･P・チャーチ氏の名前が明らかにされたのでした。

　　　　　　サン新聞にこの社説が最後に載ったのは,、１９４９年の１２月。その後、サン新聞は
　　　　　　他の新聞に吸収合併されました。
　　　　　　しかし、サン新聞がなくなった後も、この社説は、他の新聞や雑誌へと受け継がれ
　　　　　　決して消えることはありませんでした。
