Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer



1939年、コピーライターのR・L・メイがモンゴメリー・ウォード店の
広告の為に創ったのが、サンタクロースと旅を続ける
９頭目のトナカイ(ルドルフ）を物語にしたのが、有名な
『赤鼻のトナカイ』の始まりです。

当初、ウォード店の客は、パンフレットの形で物語を手にしていました。
数年後、この物語は本になって出版されました。
更に、1949年に作者メイの義兄弟であるジョニー・マークスがこの物語
に沿って作詞・作曲をしました。この歌をジーンオートリーが歌って
レコードを発売すると、大ヒット！
今やクリスマスソングの定番の一つとなったのです。

Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it

Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Play in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?

Then all the reindeer loved him
And they shouted out with glee
"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history!"
