22nd Athens Classic Marathon

From Marathon to Athens

The same course as the Athens Olympic's one
November 7, 2004

That morning

While birds were seeing us

About 3,000 runners gathered at the place of an ancient battlefield, Marathon

The runners started (through the starting gate and on a blue line)

Toward Athens (Athina in Greek)

Around the tomb for warriors of "the battle of Marathon"

We ran

A good Netherlander who took my photo ran

Even a dog ran, from 5 Km to 20 Km (truely)

Greek people cheered for us

The course has its peak of 240 meters high at 32Km

There, runners struggled to run

Across the peak, relieved a little

Beyond the Paula Radcriffe's point

Through city streets

To ...

To an Olympic stadium (Panathinaiko stadium)

To the finish line !

Maybe Athena at Parthenon (upper right) also cheered for the runners.

Just like she did in 490 B.C. for an Athenian soldier who died after he arrived at Athens
