Returned to Japan when he was two. He lived in a kibbutz in Israel after
he graduated from Waseda University in 1967. Hirokawa encountered the Third Middle East War. He also visited a site of the Palestinian Nakba caused by the Israeli independence that came in 1948, a year after the United Nations Resolution on the partitioning of Palestine. These experiences made Hirokawa deeply committed to the Palestinian issue. He continued covering the Middle East even after his return to Japan in 1970. His coverage of the Lebanon War and the massacre in a Palestinian refugee camp in 1982 became an important news source worldwide. Hirokawa has also kept filming other various tragedies caused by humans, such as the Chernobyl disaster, nuclear contamination in the world, Auschwitz and the HIV-tainted blood scandal. His coverage is always based on the side of the attacked or the sufferers. His consistent stance to be involved deeply in victims led to the establishment of relief organizations for Palestine and Chernobyl, and their activities have continued to date. Even with the world having been rapidly inclined to war since September 11, 2001, Hirokawa has kept warning against the current situation in which information only of the attacking side is unilaterally released. He launched a photo magazine “DAYS JAPAN” in March 2004 for fear that journalism was being lost, and he has been its chief editor ever since.
