人間とはなんだろうという興味から、生物としてのヒトと、社会的存在としての人間のはざまに、その本質を探ろうと試みる。国内外にて、インスタレーションや絵画作品の発表のほか、“Between
ECO & EGO”など国際交流展の企画運営を手がける。

1979年から発表を始める。テーマとなった対象から、様々な「記憶」や「予感」を彷彿とさせる断片を抽出・採集し、それらを脱構築的な方法論で再編成するサイトスペシフィックな作品や、パフォーマンスを創り出す

「生態系の一員としての人間のあり方[ECO]と、ひとりひとりの意識や欲望[EGO]。この相反しながら不可欠なふたつのはざまで、私たちはいかに折り合いをつけていくのか？」をテーマに、開催地の地域性や世界との繋がりを意識した活動を展開する現代アートプロジェクト。鋳物の街、埼玉県川口市の街や人に深く関わった2004年日本展、それをギリシャに紹介したギリシャ展、世界19カ国の作家と交流を持った2006年展など。

Yoshiko Maruyama
Maruyama's installations and paintings are concerned with
the mystery of what makes us human and the quest for true human nature
by looking at the relationships between the biological and social existence
of human beings. Maruyama has met many people of diverse ethnicities and
nationalities and been fascinated with their inner feelings and humanness.
She is active in hosting international exhibitions and likes traveling.

Tokio Maruyama has been exhibiting his works since 1979. He produces his works mainly through fieldwork in urban environments. From a particular theme, he abstracts various factors that invoke people's memories or make them anticipate the future. By re-organizing such factors in deconstructive methods, he creates site-specific works and performances.

The main theme of our project is not preserving the environment but looking squarely at the actions of human beings, who make up a part of the ecosystem (ECO) while satisfying their egos and pursuing their daily lives(EGO), and thinking about how we should strike a balance between these two apparently antithetical concepts. The city of Kawaguchi has played a crucial role in the theme as well. The project as a whole and each artistユs work have been closely intertwined with the city and people living there.
