"SIPAF2002 remembrance of smile" Text by TSUBAKIHARA Akiyo

The performance in South Korea, focused on the theme of "Woman." The organizer, Yoon, Jin Sup (*1), has also planned many other events, such as fine art exhibitions and performance festivals, in particular, the KWANGJU BIENNALE. The Noam Gallery (*2) has quite a big space of 2F.3F, and has planned exhibitions of printing and drawing. The artists Jae Seon Moon and Seiji Shimoda performed their works as special guests of this gallery. Although Jae Seon Moon is male, he appears androgynous in a delicate atmosphere. Shimoda's performance took into consideration both female and male elements.
6 performers from Japan and 8 from South Korea participated in this event. Chae Song Wha slowly reeled in a guardian deity of children that was bound up with white cloth. Moon Kyeong Ja worn a part of a white hanbok and kept getting under that thin long white cloth. Han Young Ae performed a dance piece. Lee Mi Jeong released birds in a mosquito net. Then, she read the male names as if murmuring outside. Kim, Eun-Mi used eggshells to inspect ideas about the child-bearing sex and gender. Sonia created her work exploring the theme of applying make-up, a typically female daily activity. The Japanese artists performed a separate work. I began by introducing some of the works. Michi Nohara's performance that represented her drawing sense. Miyaki Inukai kept doing her presentation quietly, using the sound of her own breath. Naoko Sakamoto's performance involved walking around the city with a wedding dress, then suddenly turning into a human foot. Jyunko Iga stuck many joss sticks into her head, which created a space composed of small lights and smells. I colored the crest of a chrysanthemum which is the symbol of Japanese Empeutror and performed the act of completing the sign. This might appear similar to Pop art.
Although I have had no actual war experience, for a long time I have not been able to travel to the countries that Japan has invaded in the past. This presented me with a mental conflict. I want to go the places the Japanese had invaded and ascertain what we had done; nevertheless, it is true that I cannot confront this problem boldly. I could not even read a book about this calmly. I always felt despair. I think that this despair was for not only myself but also for humanity. This is not the only problem between Japan and South Korea. Even though individuals from both countries may be thoughtful and have a deep affection for each other, political and economic disputes continue to take place globally even now. This is my problem, too. In South Korea, I had planed to go to the INDEPENDENCE HALL, especially The Hall of Japanese Aggression. However, it would have taken three hours, so I had to abandon this plan. Shimoda had previously visited South Korea several times and he already visited there. Almost all South Korean people visit the INDEPENDENCE HALL. In addition, I also performed my work dealing with the theme of eye contact. I gazed at a spectator's eye at close range and put one seal that symbolize an eye on his/her face or clothes. During my performance, I received a lot of presents -- that is, the viewer's smile. The people in the world become happy! That is my wish, but this may not be realized during my lifetime. Can I still do something? Though the world remains too dark for me to change it, the memory of one person's smile shines light on me. coomapsumunida. Thank you. I hope we will meet each other some day.
