6. Wildlife of Corcovado N.P.

LOCATION:

  • South-western part of Costa Rica.
  • At the Osa Peninsula.

ACCESS:

  • By air from San Jose to Drake, takes about an hour by sesna.
  • By boat from Drake to lodges organized by them.
  • There are some tours from San Jose.

ACCOMMODATION:

  • There are a lot of lodges around Corcovado National Park and an accomodation at Sirena camp in the Park.

  • There are a lot of waterbirds along the shore, and also a lot of birds are observed in mangrove.
  • Shorebirds and Seabirds are observed here, for example, Brown Pelican, Great frigatebird, Brown Booby, Red-footed Booby, Royal Tern, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, White Ibis, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Little Blue Heron, Green-backed Heron, etc...
  • Lots of forest birds are observed in the park, for example, Great Curassow, Great Tinamou, Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture, Common Black-Hawk, Laughing Falcon, Double-toothed Kite, Tiny Hawk, Roadside Hawk, White Hawk, Scarlet Macaw, Beryl-crowned Hummingbird, Violaceous Trogon, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Ringed Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Blue-crowned Motmot, Lineated Woodpecker, Roufous-winged Woodpecker, Golden-naped Woodpecker, Black-hooded Antshrike, Red-capped Manakin, Blue-crowned Manakin, White-winged Becard, Turquoise Cotinga, Roufous Piha, Tropical Kingbird, Streaked Flycatcher, Social Flycatcher, Riverside Wren, Black-bellied Wren, etc.
  • This is the best place to observe Scarlet Macaw closely in Costa Rica. Especially, they are gathering around Sirena camp.

MAMMALS:

  • Lot of mammals are observed this area, for example, Brown-throated three-toed sloth, Central American squirrel monkey, White-fronted capuchin monkey, Mantled howler monkey, Northern raccoon, Central American agouti, Baird's Tapir, Collared peccary, Jaguar, Southern river otter, Long-nosed bat, Squirrels, Whales, Dorphins, etc.
