3. Wildlife of Palo Verde N.P.

LOCATION:

  • North-western part of Costa Rica.
  • At the end of Nicoya gulf.

ACCESS:

  • By bus from San Jose to Canas.
  • By taxi from Canas.

ACCOMMODATION:

  • There is only one OTS reserch station in the park.
  • There are some camp sites in the park.
  • There are many hotels and inn in Liberia.

  • There are a lot of waterbirds in the Park, because there are some large marsh, lake and the Tempisque river in the park. You can hire boats at the OTS reserch station or join a tour from Liberia. For example, Jabiru (only nesting in this place in Costa Rica, if you are very lucky, you can see them.), Anhinga, Olivaceous Cormorant, Wood Stork, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Boat-billed Heron, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Limpkin, Great Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, Great Heron, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Green-backed Heron, Sora, Purple Gallinule, Northern JacanaCommon Gallinule, Least Grebe, Blue-winged Teal, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, etc...
  • Some of the birds spieces are unique, for example, Yellow-naped Parrot, White-fronted Parrot, Orange-fronted Parakeet, Elegant Trogon, Black-headed Trogon, Hoffmann's Woodpecker, etc...

  • Mantled Howler Monkey , Central American Spider Monkey and White-faced Capuchin are very common primates in this park.
  • White-nosed Coati, Northern Raccoon and Collared Peccary are also common in this park.
