Wildlife around the Lake Malawi

LOCATION:
  • Southern Malawi.
  • About 200km from Lilongwe.
ACCESS:
  • Good road from Lilongwe to Salima along M14 road.
  • Turn south into M5 road and going dart road (but not so bad road , may be tarred recently) about 70km.
  • Turn left to Monkey Bay.
ACCOMMODATION:
  • More than 10 rondavals in the Lake Malawi N.P.
  • Need reservation at D.N.P.W.
  • There is the Stevens guest house near the park. It has more than 30 2-bed rooms and a restaurant. Facilities may be improved recently.
  • There are some good resort hotels along Lake Malawi;
    Ex. Club Makokola, Nkopola Lodge, Palm Beach Hotel etc.

WILDLIFE:

FISH;
  • There are a lot of beautiful fish in the lake.
  • More than 450 fish species have been observed.

  • The bird life is also rich, especially water birds.
ANIMALS;
  • And if you are lucky you can see spotted-necked otter at the fishing ports.

SPOTTED-NECKED OTTER

(Lutra maculicollis)

The otters are fairly shy. So it is very difficult to see them. But when the fishing boats come back to the fishing port to unload fish in the evening, they come and wait to get dropped fish.
